What’s Blooming This Month at The Grove: October Edition

October is one of our favorite months at The Grove.

The Florida Panhandle may not have the dramatic fall color of other parts of the country, but cooler mornings and changing seasons bring a whole new selection of plants to enjoy.

This month, summer color begins making way for some of the flowers that will carry our landscapes through fall and into the cooler months.

What to Look For in October

Pansies: One of the classics of cool-season gardening, pansies bring cheerful color to containers, flower beds, and entryways. With so many colors available, they're easy to coordinate with almost any home or landscape.

Petunias: Petunias provide masses of blooms and work beautifully in beds, pots, and hanging containers. October is when we can begin welcoming these cool-season favorites back into North Florida landscapes.

Dianthus: Compact growth and colorful blooms make dianthus a great choice for borders and the front of landscape beds. Their pink, red, and white tones work well alongside other fall and winter annuals.

Snapdragons: Want a little height? Snapdragons add upright blooms and another layer of texture to flower beds and containers.

Violas: Smaller than pansies but packed with color, violas are a great option for mass plantings, borders, and containers.

Dusty Miller: Not every plant needs flowers to stand out. Dusty Miller's soft silver foliage provides beautiful contrast against colorful annuals and makes mixed fall plantings feel more complete.

Give Your Beds a Fall Refresh

October is the perfect time to clean up flower beds that worked hard all summer.

Remove declining annuals, pull weeds, clean up bed edges, and refresh mulch where needed before bringing in your fall color.

This also gives you an opportunity to step back and look at the overall design of the landscape instead of simply replacing one plant with another.

Could the bed use more height?

Does it need an evergreen shrub for year-round structure?

Would a small ornamental tree create a stronger focal point?

Sometimes the biggest improvement isn't adding more plants. It's choosing the right plants.

Don't Forget About Water

Cooler temperatures don't mean newly planted flowers, trees, and shrubs can be forgotten.

North Florida can experience dry periods during the fall, so new landscaping still needs consistent watering while roots become established.

Check the soil and rainfall rather than relying only on the temperature outside.
